Christmas Place Mats and Napkins - Page 2 Quilting and Binding Step 10. Layer place mat top, batting, and backing and baste using safety pins. Machine quilt "in-the-ditch." Step 11. Using Diagram X-A as a guide, sew medium green binding strips to long sides of place mat. Turn strips to back and pin in place on each end (Diagram X-B). Step 12. Using Diagram XI, sew side binding strips onto place mat leaving approximately 1" of binding extending on each end. Wrap extensions around to back and sew through all layers. Step 13. Sew 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" medium green squares and 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" Christmas print squares together, right side to right side. Leave opening for turning (Diagram XII). Step 15.
