| Step 2. Sew pieced triangles together to make pieced square (Diagram II).

Step 3. Referring to Diagram III, stitch star print 1 1/2" strips to sides. Trim even with top/bottom. Stitch remaining 1 1/2" star print strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew Halloween print 20" strips to sides; trim even. Sew Halloween print 24" strips to top/bottom; trim even.

Appliquéing and Finishing
Step 4. If you are using plush fabric for your spiders, as Linda did, read Make It Minkee! on page 29 in McCall's Quilting, October 2005 for her handling tips. Using seam lines as placement guide, position template A-G fabrics in alphabetical order. Appliqué in place. Using small satin stitch in contrasting thread (Diagram IV), stitch spider mouths, following patterns on Templates B and D. Tack buttons to grey circles for eyes.

Step 5. Optional: Following manufacturer's instructions, iron fusible interfacing 20" squares to wrong sides of tote front and Halloween print 20 1/2" square, centering.
Step 6. Fold black star print 3 1/2" x 20" strip in half lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" seam along long side. Turn right side out; press. Make 2. Place handle on tote front, right sides together, and stitch scant 1/4" from raw edges (Diagram V). Repeat for tote back (Halloween print square).
Step 7. Place tote front and back right sides together and stitch 1/4" from side and bottom edges (leave top open). To make lining, repeat with spiderweb print 20 1/2" squares, leaving 6" opening in bottom seam for turning. Turnlining right side out; press.
Step 8. Insert lining into tote, right sides together, matching seam lines
and keeping handles between tote and lining, away from top opening (Diagram VI). Stitch 1/4" seam all around top edge. Turn tote through opening in lining bottom. Hand stitch opening closed. Press tote top edge.
