Planning and Cutting
The strips for the multicolor large dot border are fussy-cut to center the dots. The striped rectangles in the pieced border have stripes running perpendicular to the pillow edge. To do likewise, cut assorted stripe 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles with stripes parallel to the long sides.

A knowledge of foundation piecing (paper piecing) is required for this pattern. For a review of foundation-piecing techniques, see Piece by Piece. In the Cutting Instructions, we provide guidance in cutting shapes for the foundation areas. The striped 6" x 8" rectangle for Foundation Area 1 is cut with stripes parallel to the short sides. Use an accurate 1/4" seam allowance during assembly, so the outer pieced border fits well.
