Piecing the Blocks 1. Sew cream 3 7/8" triangles to burgundy/gold 3 1/2" square to make block corner (Diagram I). Make 120. 2. Referring to Diagram II, stitch 4 block corners to 9" fussy-cut medallion square to make Art Square Block. Make 30 total, 15 of each motif. 3. Stitch Templates B and BR to sides of Template A, aligning match points (Diagram III). Repeat to make pieced squares in quantities and fabrics shown. 4. Sew 4 pieced squares (2 of each arrangement) together to make sashing strip (Diagram IV). Make 71. Quilt Top Assembly Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps. 6. Stitch 7 sashing rows using 6 black floral squares and 5 sashing strips each. Stitch 6 block rows using 6 sashing strips and 5 blocks each. Stitch rows together, alternating. 7. Sew 98" cream strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Sew remaining cream strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew black floral strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining floral strips to top/bottom; trim even. Quilting and Finishing 8. Layer, baste, and quilt. Toby used gold thread to machine detail quilt each medallion square, adding a leaf design in each burgundy/gold square. Scroll shapes fill the cream areas, and the sashing features loops and arcs with curlicue flowers in the sashing posts. The outer border was stitched in a continuous large flower design. Bind with black large floral (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
