If you are not a machine embroiderer, you could substitute hand embroidery based on a motif from your fabric choices, or feature a fancy quilting pattern in the cream texture 5 1/2" squares.

3. Sew lavender print 2" x 20" strip to sides of block; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining lavender print strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.
4. Add machine or hand embroidery motifs to cream texture squares (optional).

Quilting and Finishing
5. Layer and baste pillow top for quilting method of your choice
(see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). Doris machine quilted around the embroidery motifs, and in the ditch for the patchwork. She added meander stitching to the background of the cream texture squares.
6. Turn under 1/4" on long side of lavender floral stripe 14" x 17 1/2" rectangles. Press. Turn under an additional 2 1/4" to make hems; press. Stitch in place. Stitch 1/4" from folded edge on each rectangle. Trim quilted pillow top to 17 1/2" x 17 1/2". Lay lavender floral stripe rectangles on pillow top, right sides together, aligning raw edges (floral stripe rectangles will overlap each other approximately 5"). Sew around all 4 sides, using 1/2" seam allowance. Trim corners, turn and press. Stitch 1
1/4" from edges through all layers, creating flange. Insert pillow form.
