April 2006 Issue

This month we asked our staff members,
"How do the men in your life feel about your quilting?"

Beth Hayes
Editor in Chief
The men in my life consider me a very lucky lady. Certainly my professional life is all-consumed by quilting, working with quilters who create the beautiful designs on our pages, and interacting with the McCall's staff who make each day a creative whirlwind! I don't have as much time to quilt as when son Rick was a little guy, but my home is accessorized with quilts I made and filled with my vintage quilt collection.

My husband has always lovingly referred to my sewing room as the "fabric weasel's den" because he believes something is living in there building little piles here and there. But, he is pretty careful to never compare the cost of my quilting with his woodworking tools and projects. I would win hands down every time! I'm just happy that he has a hobby he enjoys as much as I love my quilting.

Art Director
My son and grandsons love the quilts I sent them as Christmas presents when they moved from Colorado. Hopefully they are warm and cozy on those really freezing Minnesota winter days and a reminder of someone here who misses them so much. Three brothers are quilt recipents and loving them—two for 50th birthdays and one a big bed "comforter" for open heart surgery recovery. Much support and love going and coming.

My significant other teases me about the "fast paced high pressure world of quilting," but he is very supportive of all my work. He's a professional musician, so he understands getting lost in a creative endeavor, with all its challenges and rewards.

My dad is enthusiastic, my husband is tolerant, and my son is amused. However, the men in my life who are most delighted with my quilting are all feline. I have four cats, three of them male, who revel in fabric and thread and all things batting! They love bobbins that skitter across the floor and nests of clean fabric fresh from the dryer!

My husband loves the creative and artistic aspects of quilting, and often has helpful ideas for block settings or designs, but he gets nervous about the copious quantities of fabric, tools and other materials that go into making quilts. It doesn't help that he's kind of a neat-nik and my usually messy studio is also home to some mutual storage! (Maybe it's time to rethink our storage arrangement…)

The men in my life are my two grown nephews. They are my own private moving company. By now they are familiar with all the bags of fabric, all the sewing machines, the boxes of books marked "HEAVY", the many plastic tubs of special quilting supplies, and the alarm clock that reminds me when it's time to stop. (That always gives them a laugh.) What can I say? They're very supportive of their "Aunt Patty"; they each got a quilt made for their especially tall builds, and in their own special colors.
