Growth Chart

Planning & Cutting
This cheerful little wall hanging is just the thing to measure the growth of your own little sprout. The center of the flower features a photo transfer onto fabric. See McCall's Quilting, April 2006, page 74 for information on this technique. To fussy-cut Template B shape from photo on fabric, make a template from clear plastic. Include seam lines so you can center the photo. Place template on fabric photo, centering as desired. Mark around edge of template and cut out.

A tape measure, machine-appliquéd in place, provides the stem for your grow chart flower. Hang your quilt so that the 14" mark on the tape measure is 14" from the floor. The featured quilt has a hand-pieced flower which is machine appliquéd in place. Leaves were fused, then machine satin-stitched around the edges.

Cutting Instructions
Note: Cutting instructions for appliqué shapes are given on templates.
Brown print
... 1 strip 5" x 10 1/2"
... 1 strip 2 1/2" x 8 1/2"
White/black print
... 1 strip 14 1/2" x 51 1/2", cut on lengthwise grain

Piecing the Flowers and Appliquéing the Wall Hanging
Step 1. Sew 2 Template A fabrics, right sides together, using 1/4" seam allowance, leaving straight end open for turning (Diagram I). Turn and press. Make 6. Baste and gather straight edge of each petal as shown on Template A. Baste petal in place on Template B fabric (Diagram II). Make 6.

Step 2. Referring to Diagram III, stitch fabric hexagons and photo transfer hexagon together, starting and stopping at match points and keeping curved edges of petals out of seams. Tack curved edges of petals to hexagons.

Step 3. Trim brown print 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip as shown in Diagram IV. Finger-press white/black print rectangle in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to photo and Assembly Diagram, position flower, leaves, trimmed brown strip, and remaining brown strip. Appliqué in place, leaving openings at center of flower bottom and flowerpot top for inserting tape measure stem after quilting.

Quilting and Finishing
Step 4. Layer, baste, and quilt. The background of the featured quilt has allover meander quilting. The photo hexagon is highlighted by ditch quilting, while a double zigzag line of quilting marks the flowerpot brim. To make stem, trim tape measure at 13 _" mark and at 48 _" mark. Machine appliqué tape measure stem in place, tucking ends into flower bottom and flowerpot top openings. Stitch openings closed. Bind quilt with red print (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
