This month we asked our staff:

"If quilts could win Oscars and Emmys, what movie or TV show's Best Supporting Textile would get your vote?"

Beth Hayes
Editor in Chief
Can you guess this staff is a movie-loving bunch? It makes for lively Monday morning conversations, and when this question was posed, my answer was immediate. One of my favorite chick flicks, The Mirror Has Two Faces starring Barbra Streisand and Jeff Bridges, has the best vintage quilts warming its New York City apartment sets. I'm jumping to a conclusion the quilts are vintage, but they sure add to the romantic ambiance! Be sure to watch the scene as the closing credits roll, too.

I love all I can remember. The beautiful gift quilts Susan Sarandon made for her kids in Stepmom. Danny Glover's quilt pants in Lonesome Dove. Robin Williams' pinwheel pajamas in Toys. I think my favorite is the wonderful, fabulous wall hanging in the Tibetan monastery in the movie Kundun.

Recently I saw the movie The Holiday with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. Both leading ladies decide they need to get away for the holidays and trade homes (a lovely home in LA and a dreamy country cottage in England). Scenes in the cottage bedroom brought back happy memories of my trip to England and the wonderful quilted bed toppers and linens available there. The "tent" scene is so adorable too. This is a super chick flick and one that I will buy on DVD.

I think the quilt shown in the barn raising/quilting bee scene in Witness did a great acting job. A floral appliqué design on a white background, it wasn't in the traditional Amish style at all, but it convincingly portrayed the type of quilt often made and sold to tourists in Lancaster County, PA.

As a youngster, the Laura Ingalls Wilder books were some of my favorites, and later the TV show, "Little House on the Prairie," became a hit at our house. I loved the frontier spirit of it all, and Laura's sister Mary's sewing skill—even when blind—was truly inspiring. I can't think of any specific quilt from this show, but there were many humble works of cloth, made from what they had, that gave plenty of comfort on those cold nights on the northern plains.

We recently had a wonderful question from a reader about a specific quilt seen in the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Doing a little research reminded me how much I love all the "old" musicals, how much quilts are a part of those times, and just how homey they make me feel! I cast my vote for the quilts in any of the musicals popular when I was growing up.

I absolutely love You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. As a poor, deprived Westerner who has never been to New York, I get great pleasure from feeling as though I am visiting New York every time I watch it. However, the reality of New York must be quite overwhelming at times, and so I love it when we see Meg's character, Kathleen, dive into her fluffy bed and pull up her serene and lovely beige pinwheel quilt. It's a very scrappy, vintage-looking quilt, with a cream and blue backing fabric that seems just as aged as the front. Peace and comfort amid the chaos...the perfect quilt!
