Appliquéing the Blocks
Step 1. Finger-press white rectangles in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I, position template fabrics. Appliqué in place. Make 2 total Appliqué Blocks.

Piecing the Sashing and Border Strips
Step 2. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of white 3 7/8" square. Referring to Diagram II, place marked square on red square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 62 (1 left over).
Step 3. Sew 7 pieced squares together end to end (Diagram III). Make 4 for side border strips. Sew 11 pieced squares together end to end. Make 3 for center sashing and top/bottom border strips.
Quilt Top Assembly
Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps.
Step 4. Sew strips of 7 pieced squares to sides of blocks.
Step 5. Stitch white 3 1/2" squares to end of remaining pieced strips. Sew blocks to long sides of pieced strip. Sew remaining pieced strips to top/bottom.

Quilting and Finishing
Step 6. Layer, baste, and quilt. The appliqué and pieced squares were hand outline quilted, with repeating curved lines of quilting added inside the eagle. The background is filled with a grid set on point, with lines of stitching 2" apart. Bind with blue solid.
