Step 2. Arrange and sew 3 rows of 5 matching nine-patch squares and 4 matching cream 3 1/2" squares. Sew rows together to make Double Nine-patch Block (Diagram I-D). Make 28 total. In same manner, make 28 blocks using 5 matching cream 3 1/2" squares and 4 matching nine-patches each.

Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps.
Step 3. Arrange and sew 7 rows of 8 blocks each (alternating blocks as shown). Sew rows together. Sew green/ red print 2" x 74" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining green/red strips to top/bottom; trim even with side.
Step 4. Measure exact width of quilt (from raw edge to raw edge). Trim beige print 8 1/2" x 69" strips to this measurement and sew green/red print 8 1/2" squares to ends. Stitch untrimmed beige strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Sew pieced strips to top/bottom.

Step 5. To make vine, fold brown texture bias-cut 1 1/2" x 280" strip in half, wrong sides together (see Diagram II). Stitch 1/4" from raw edge. Trim seam allowance to 1/8". Press tube flat, centering seam allowance on back so raw edge isn't visible from front. Using 1/2" bias bar makes pressing faster and easier. Cut strip into 2 lengths of 67" each and 2 lengths 72" each.

Step 6. Referring to quilt illustration, position 67" vines on top/bottom beige borders and 72" vines on the sides. Using appliqué method of choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions), appliqué in place. Add Template A-C fabrics and appliqué in place.

Quilting and Finishing
Step 7. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). Kathie used Mountain Mist Cream Rose batting and machine quilted diagonal lines intersecting the 3" squares on the quilt published in the October 2004 issue of McCall's Quilting. She ditch quilted the appliqué and filled the background and corner squares with a meander. A wavy line runs the length of each inner border.
Step 8. Bind quilt with red texture fabric (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
