Planning, Cutting, and Marking
Associate editor, Sandee Wachal, used this pattern to make her modern version, All Hallow's Eve quilt (pattern available in the October 2004 issue). She shares a simple machine appliqué trick to make the job go even quicker. (See Hints for Fast and Easy Machine Appliqué.)

Cutting Instructions
White solid
... *16 strips 2 3/4" x width of fabric (WOF)
... 20 squares 9 1/2" x 9 1/2"
... *2 squares 8" x 8", cut in half diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles
... *5 squares 15" x 15", cut in half twice diagonally to make 20 quarter-square triangles (2 left over)

Pink solid
... *16 strips 2 3/4" x WOF
... 48 squares 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"

*Cut first.

Piecing the Blocks
Step 1. Referring to Diagram I, sew white and pink 2 3/4" x WOF strips together to make quantities of strips sets indicated. Press seams in direction of arrows. Cut segments 2 3/4" wide, in quantities shown for each strip set.
