Red and White Quilt

Planning, Cutting, and Marking
The original red and white quilt for our Yesterday & Today feature (McCall's Quilting, August 2004) was made using two red prints (red/white print and a red/white dot) with white solid background. The red dot fabric has faded to a soft pale pink. The quiltmaker ran out of the red dot when she was making the quilt. Please notice the right side of the bottom row where she completed the row of blocks using the red/white print. Today we panic when we run out of a fabric, searching quilt shops and our friend's stashes for enough to finish the quilt with equal numbers of blocks. The original quiltmaker just made do with what she had, which today we find "charming". For pattern purposes, we make equal numbers of blocks from the two red prints.

The original quiltmaker cut the corners off the T's when she sewed the blocks together with the setting squares and triangles. Because the amount differs from block to block, we can only speculate that her seams were too deep or her templates were not accurate.

Piecing the Blocks
Step 1. On wrong side of white solid 3 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place white square on red/white print 3 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 84. Repeat process using white with red dot 3 7/8" squares. Make 84.
