Yesterday & Today Series

While many quilters believe that the Amish or other groups of quilters included intentional errors in their work, Brenda feels that mistakes are found in old quilts for the same reason you'll find one in her quilt—"the quiltmaker screwed up and didn't figure it out until after the whole thing was quilted!"

Mistake made in Prism Dance Quilt
Antique Quilt

After seeing Brenda's mistake (pictured above), visitor JoAnne Schack asked the following question:

"Did the seamstress for the original antique quilt intentionally include an error in her quilt top or is it like Brenda said, "She probably simply screwed up!???"

"Note error: Bottom, right corner; 9th row up from the bottom; 6th row in from the right edge - OOPS! the square is turned!! The debate goes on!"

My goodness JoAnne, you are right! Until you brought it to our attention, we hadn't notice the mistake in the old quilt! Looks like Brenda and the maker of the antique quilt have something in common. Brenda confessed she "screwed up." The original quiltmaker's reason will always remain a mystery! Did she do it intentionally, or is it simply a mistake? We can only speculate.
