Beth's Shimmering Stars
Designed by Beth Hayes

Bring these stars to life by using window templates to cut identical segments from your stripe print fabric, which is a popular choice now. Designer Beth Hayes has utilized these prints cleverly, creating many different plays of pattern from one main fabric. Four points of each star are cut from the primary print; and the other four come from various blue prints, a different one for each star. The setting triangles, border, and binding also come from the stripe print fabric, believe it or not! Although you'll need to buy a bit of extra fabric to experiment with prints in this manner, it's a small price to pay for the fun you'll have making this quilt.

Planning, Cutting, and Marking ... Because there are so many points and bias edges in this quilt, it is very important that the cutting and piecing be as accurate as possible. Take time to cut accurately and mark the cut pieces for ease in piecing. A little extra time taken in these steps now will save time later. Make window templates (image) by cutting out the inside of Templates A and B on seam line, or make templates from clear template material. These templates will allow you to place the templates exactly where you wish on the striped design.

If you choose to use the same motif for all Template B corner triangles, as we did, cut the triangles before the Template A diamonds to insure you don't run out of the chosen triangle motif.

Beth says, "Enjoy choosing design areas for A! Just four identical designs are needed for each block (image). Turn the template in various directions to achieve different looks. Generally speaking, grain lines will be disregarded! Our goal is to make optimum use of the stripe print design to create as many variations as possible --- we can't let the grain lines dictate."

A quick method for cutting Template C background pieces is to cut eight strips 3 1/4" x 44" with a rotary cutter. Fold strip in half, and in half again to make four layers. Place template on strip, aligning raw edge with straight of grain on the template, and draw onto fabric. Continue this process two more times (see Cutting Diagram). Rotary cut carefully and repeat on remaining seven strips.

After all the elements are cut, arrange the A diamonds and A1 diamonds to make pleasing pairings.
