Planning, Cutting, and Marking
Karen completed the pumpkin appliqué quickly using paper-backed fusible web and a machine buttonhole stitch. Refer to the Quick Appliqué Option below if you prefer to use this method, being sure to reverse the templates so the design will turn out as shown.
The appliqué background square is not cut oversized to allow for shrinkage during appliqué.
We call for assorted brown prints for the pumpkin stems/details and for the maple leaf stems. If you wish, leftovers from the brown fabrics in the Log Cabin Blocks can be used for these elements.
Chain piece (see the Machine Piecing section of our Basic Quiltmaking Instructions) the Log Cabin Block units along each WOF strip if you wish, being sure to note the two different block arrangements (see Diagrams VII-K and VII-L).

Quick Appliqué Option
To speed up the appliqué process, follow these instructions for paper-backed fusible web appliqué.

• Purchase 1/4 yd. of paper-backed fusible web.
• Trace templates on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines.
• Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on marked lines.
• Fold background square to make placement lines (see Step 1). Position template fabrics and fuse in place according to manufacturer's instructions.
• Appliqué edges of template fabrics using machine buttonhole stitch, if desired.
