Planning, Cutting, and Marking
Lerlene Nevaril, author of Hidden Block Quilts (C&T Publishing) has done it again! A close look at this quilt reveals the design source for the Connector Blocks. They're Crown of Thorns blocks with a few pieces taken away. The secondary patterns created when you sew these blocks side by side produce stunning results with simple piecing. Rotary cutting gets you going fast, but a template is needed for the pieced border. See Lerlene's Tips for Piecing Skinny Triangles to ensure accuracy when piecing these skinny triangles.

Lerlene’s Tips for Piecing Skinny Triangles

• Cut out paper template and glue to template plastic. Cut out plastic pattern on solid line.
• For ease in matching, punch a small hole where dots are printed on the template.
• Mark a dot on the fabrics through holes.

These dots are invaluable when piecing the units and sewing the units together.

Piecing the Blocks
1. On wrong side of gold mottle 2 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place gold square on green mottle 2 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 96. Repeat using rust mottle/green (make 32), gold/ dark brown (make 48), green/brown (make 16).
