Piecing and Appliquéing the Blocks
Step 1. Referring to Diagram I, arrange and sew rows using cream texture and green texture 1 3/4" squares, and cream texture 2 1/8" half-square triangles. Sew rows together to make pieced triangle. Make 12. Repeat process, using red texture squares and blue texture squares; make quantities as shown.

Step 2. Sew matching pieced triangles to sides of beige large floral 7 9/16" square to make Pieced Block, as shown in Diagram II. Make 8 total.

Step 3. Fold 1" x 10 1/2" green tone-on-tone strips in half, wrong sides together (see Diagram III). Stitch 1/4" from raw edge. Trim seam allowance to 1/8". Press tube flat, centering seam allowance on back so raw edge isn't visible from front. Using 1/4" bias bar makes pressing faster and easier. Make 14.
Step 4. Note: The cream texture appliqué background squares are cut oversized to allow for shrinkage during appliqué. Finger-press cream texture 12" square in half diagonally twice; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram IV, position green tone-on-tone stems and template fabrics, keeping in mind that square will be trimmed to 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" (finished size is 10" square). Using appliqué method of choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions), appliqué in place. Trim to 10 1/2" square. Make 7 Appliqué Blocks.

Step 6. Stitch red texture 1 3/4" x 56" strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining red texture strips to top/bottom; trim even. Sew blue small floral 6 1/2" x 59" strips to sides; trim even. Stitch remaining blue small floral strips to top/bottom; trim even.
Quilting and Finishing
Step 7. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). Phyllis machine ditch quilted the appliqué and borders. The corners of the pieced blocks are crosshatched and a floral motif is centered on the fussy-cut squares. Flowing floral leaf vines fill the borders.
Step 8. Bind quilt with blue small floral fabric (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). |
