Design Notes
Mary's design allows her stars, both the large block stars and the smaller stars formed where the sashing units meet, to float on the shirting stripe background. Most of Mary's stripe pieces were arranged so that the stripes run vertically, but she varied the direction when arranging some of the four patches in the block corners. Do likewise if you wish.
The block centers are made from strip-pieced segments (Diagram II-B). If your green and red fabrics are not at least 42" wide (usable width), it will be necessary to piece 1 of the 12 center segments from individual patches. To do this, cut and sew together 2 red 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles and a green 3 1/2"square. |

Piecing the Blocks and Sashing Units
1. Referring to Diagram I-A, sew 2" x WOF green and white strips together. Make 7. Press in direction of arrow. Cut into 136 segments 2" wide. Sew 2 segments into four patch (Diagram I-B). Make 68; set 20 aside for sashing.
