2. In similar manner, make remaining strip sets (Diagrams II-A and B), press, and cut into segments in quantities and widths shown. Sew 3 segments into nine patch (Diagram II-C). Make 12.

3. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of gold 3 1/2" square. Referring to Diagram III, place marked square on white rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat on opposite end to make pieced rectangle. Make 48.

4. Sew pieced units together to make Star Block (Diagram IV). Make 12.

5. Using mark, stitch, trim, and press process from Step 3, refer to Diagrams V-A and B and make sashing squares and strips in quantities shown.


Quilt Top Assembly
Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps.
6. Stitch 2 top/bottom sashing rows using white 3 1/2" squares and 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips and sashing squares. Sew 5 quilt center sashing rows using sashing squares, four patches (set aside in Step 1), and sashing strips. Stitch 4 block rows using white strips, sashing strips, and blocks. Sew rows together.
7. Stitch red 1 1/2" x 74" strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Stitch remaining red strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew green 6 1/2" x 76" strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining green strips to top/bottom; trim even.

Quilting and Finishing
8. Layer, baste, and quilt. The background of Mary's quilt was machine quilted in a continuous swirl pattern. Green squares and borders were stitched in a leaf design. Red rectangles and gold triangles were left unquilted. Bind with green print (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
