Piecing the Blocks
1. On wrong side of cream 8 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place cream square on forest green 8 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 16.

Quilt Top Assembly
Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps.
2. Arrange and sew 4 rows of 4 pieced squares each, watching orientation of seam lines and colors. Sew rows together.
3. Sew blue 6 1/2" x 36" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining blue strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

Appliquéing the Top
4. Referring to Diagram II, position Template A fabrics on quilt top. Using machine (black thread) or hand (black perle cotton) buttonhole stitch (Diagram III), appliqué in place to complete the Hearts and Gizzards blocks and border appliqué.
Quilting and Finishing
5. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). Batting is not necessary when making felted wool quilts. Lise chose flannel for her backing fabric. Quilting was done with a large running stitch using perle cotton (Diagram IV). Lise quilted heart motifs in each pieced square, using black thread in the cream triangles and white in the green. She echo quilted the appliqué in the border with white thread. She also added a line of black running stitches 3/4" inside the outer edge of each appliqué in the center of the quilt. Due to the thickness of the fabric layers, these last stitches only went through the first layer or so of the wool.

6. Bind quilt with blue felted wool (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions and Planning).
