Prairie Tulips

Primitive-style tulips dance across the surface of this cheerful bed quilt. Triangles in the corners of each block stitch into butterflies that hover near each bloom. It's unusual to see piecework and appliqué combined in an early 20th-century pattern, let alone one that's so simple to make!

Planning a Reproduction
This fabric bouquet would please any lady! Though the maker used solid fabrics for the flowers, textured print scraps would make a lively modern-day version.

Piecing the Block
1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of purple 2 1/2" square with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place purple square on cream 11 1/2" square, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Repeat at each corner. Press open to make pieced square. Make 18.
2. Referring to Diagram I and photo, position template fabrics (in alphabetical order). Using appliqué method of choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions), appliqué in place to complete Primitive Tulip Block. Make 18.
