Planning a Reproduction
With regard to fabric, the more the merrier in this scrap quilt. Use all those odds and ends left over from other projects. The narrow size of the strips makes this a scrap saver's delight, and chain piecing saves time and effort. In the original quilt, the maker used the same fabric for pairs of adjacent strips in many of the blocks. Do likewise if you wish, being sure to plan ahead while chain piecing. For variety, place some lights and darks on wrong sides of the blocks. This adds an element of the unexpected to your scrap quilt.
Chain Piecing the Blocks
1. Read Planning a Reproduction. Place red solid 1 3/4" square on light print 1 1/8" x WOF strip, right sides together, aligning right hand raw edges. Stitch as shown in Diagram I-A. Take a few stitches beyond edge of first red square, position next red 1 3/4" square and stitch. Continue stitching and adding red squares until you reach end of strip. Repeat until you have used all red squares. Cut units apart. Press seams away from red square. Trim light print strip ends even with red square. Make 143 total.
2. In same manner, chain sew pieced units to matching light print 1 1/8" x WOF strips, right sides together (see Diagram I-B). Cut units apart, press, and trim.
