5. Stitch Templates A and AR to sides of Template B (Diagram IV). Repeat to make pieced rectangles in quantities and fabric combinations shown. Set aside 8 pieced rectangles made with green/gold print for small tree tops. Trim 1/2" from top of each remaining pieced rectangle (Diagram V).
6. Sew 6 pieced rectangles together as shown in Diagram VI, with untrimmed rectangle at top, to make pieced strip. Make 8.
7. Stitch tan rectangles to sides of grey rectangle (Diagram VII-A). Sew to bottom of pieced strip (Diagram VII-B). Make 8. 8. Mark 45° diagonal line on wrong side of cream/gold rectangle from upper right-hand corner to raw edge (Diagram VIII-A). Position marked rectangle on green rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on marked line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat on opposite end of green rectangle to make large tree top. Make 4. |

In same manner, and referring to Diagrams VIII-B and C for dimensions and fabric combinations, make 4 each of remaining tree sections. Make 4 trunk sections (Diagram IX).
9. Referring to Diagram X, sew sections together to make large tree. Make 4.

10. Referring to Assembly Diagram, stitch olive/black swirl print strips to sides of large tree. Sew small trees to sides to complete place mat top. Make 4.

11. Layer, baste, and quilt. Trees were machine quilted with undulating lines, sashing was filled with a double continuous loop design, and cream background areas were meander stitched. Bind with olive/black swirl print.
