Piecing
the Block
Step 1. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of 2 1/2" blue squares. Layer blue square and 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" background rectangle, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance. Repeat for other end of rectangle (Diagram I). Make 4 blue/background Flying Geese units.

Step 2. Using Diagram II as a placement guide, sew blue 2 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, and 4 1/2" floral print square together to make nine-patch unit. Make 1.

Step 3. Sew 2 1/2" background squares to each side of Flying Geese unit. (See Diagram III for placement of Flying Geese unit.) Sew assembled Flying Geese strip to top and bottom of nine-patch unit.

Step 4. Sew 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" background rectangles to each side of Flying Geese unit. (See Diagram IV for placement of Flying Geese unit.) Sew Flying Geese strips to sides of assembled inner block strip to complete Square in A Star Block.
